SECRET GARDEN
WEST VANCOUVER 42,000 SF
Before, the slope was a tangle: fallen logs going soft with rot, ivy strangling the trunks, old wooden stairs sagging into the boulders. You could smell salt on the wind — the ocean was right there — but there was no way down to meet it.
We didn't fight the rock. We carved rooms out of it. Now steam curls off the hot tub into the cedar branches. The lookout deck juts from its stone pillar over the rock face, and if you stand still, you can hear the waterfall working underneath you.
The steepest, rockiest piece of ground became the place the owners can't bring themselves to leave.
It usually works out that way — the harder the site, the deeper the love.

Some sites resist you. This one was simply waiting.

Then the details that turn a build into a garden. At dusk the cedar shed lights up like a paper lantern in the rhododendrons. A stone lantern leans into the company of a red Japanese maple. Between moss-covered stones, a little fountain throws blue light onto the water.

When night comes, the boardwalk switches on — a ribbon of warm light stitching the dark slope together.

The old trees never moved; the boardwalk simply learned where they stood, threading past ferns and a drift of bluebells.
Dinner happens on the patio now, above the water, while the outdoor kitchen leans against the rock wall like it grew there.

ONCE UPON A TIME...
